Who we are

Why are we here

Are you upset if you witness cruelty to animals,if you see them suffer? Are you concerned about the fate of the millions of animals we eat? Do you mind that every day many animal species disappear mostly because their environment has been destroyed?
We are also deeply concerned about these issues. We endeavour to improve the situation and work on behalf of the animals as best as we can to improve their welfare. Animals are sentient beings and they deserve care and protection. Our aim is to continually improve the relationship man-animal-environment and through our work to diminish suffering and improve the welfare of those animals kept by man as well as those in the wild.

Who are we

We are non-profit, non-governmental organisation with the statutes of a foundation. The founders of Foundation for the Protection of Animals are Mrs Marcela Lund, Czech Agricultural University in Prague, Mendel’s Agricultural and Forestry University in Brno and Veterinary and Pharmaceutical University in Brno. Since1994 we have protected the interests of animals, predominantly in the Czech Republic. As members of international organisations such as RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), WSPA (World Society for the Protection of Animals), Eurogroup for Animal Welfare we also participate at international projects and campaigns to improve animal welfare globally. We co-operate with national and international NGOs and governmental organisation relevant to animal welfare and nature protection and also with professionals in this field from all over the world. We are financed by voluntary contributions from individuals or companies and from the financial grants received mainly from animal welfare charities abroad. About 800 Czech registered donors also support our work. Our regular partners in media are Czech radio 2 and Czech TV programme ‘Do you want me?’ The presenter of this programme, Czech celebrity Ms Marta Kubišová is our honorary member.

Our activities

  • As per our statutes we re-distribute financial donations. We financially support projects and activities, which are in agreement with Foundation’s aims and policies. We regularly support animal shelters and wild life stations. During the emergency situations like natural disasters (e.g. floods in 1997 and 2002) we try to help by providing monetary and material help to the worst hit areas.
  • We believe that cruelty to animals is often caused unintentionally, that animals suffer as a result of lack of knowledge and information. That is why we put so much emphasis on education and information about animals, their needs an their problems. To love animals also means to know them well. We publish educational literature, arrange educational seminars and conferences, organise campaigns and petitions and via the media we inform the public about the sensitive issues of animal welfare.
  • We endeavour to be of assistance where animals suffer or where their environment is being destroyed. People who are concerned about animal suffering turn to us for help. We provide advice and recommendations how to deal with situations or help to initiate prosecution of animal cruelty with competent authorities.
  • We are aware of the importance of modern legislation and that is why we present suggestions for inproved legislation that can guarantee better protection and welfare to animals.
